New MTN SME packages will transform SMEs competitiveness – FESBC

Federation of Eswatini Business Community (FESBC) Vice President Hezekiel Mabuza has applauded MTN Eswatini for hearing out and responding to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) outcries about data costs and voice minutes service interconnection with other service providers.

FESBC has over 800 members and approximately over 1 000 non–members nationwide. In the recent data price cut by MTN Eswatini, alongside the company’s ‘You Deserve the Best,’ campaign, SMEs were not left out.

Through the SME Easy packages, the company gave small businesses the best value for money, and further introduced off-net minutes to connect SMEs with suppliers and clients who use other service providers.

Mabuza said these developments will significantly transform the competitiveness of the SME sector in the Kingdom of Eswatini.

“The cost of data is one of the expenses that spike the cost of doing business for SMEs. Hence, we appreciate the price cut by MTN. This comes at a time when the internet of things is rapidly becoming a technology for everyone. We have no doubt that this will enable SMEs to create new opportunities and cut operating costs,” he said.

Mabuza said they also welcome the voice minutes integration development because they deal with diverse suppliers and clients who have their preferences as well. He further applauded MTN for investing in nationwide network infrastructure.

“Before, internet access due to network unavailability was the principal obstacle to adopting technology for SMEs. Now, network coverage for MTN is no longer a problem, even for SMEs who are in the remote parts of the country,” he said.

Mabuza said going forward; they hope MTN will continue to review data prices to enable SMEs to adopt the technology.

“The trend is clear. SMEs must adopt the technology. Digital platforms can quickly process and streamline administrative tasks, giving SMEs more time and money to focus on growing their businesses. Traditionally, SMEs have used social media to their advantage in terms of marketing their products. But the COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that the use of the internet is now not optional but a necessity, especially for SMEs who have been technophobic,” he said.

Data price cut ideal for SEDCO’s SMEs virtual capacity building

The recent data price cut by MTN Eswatini will come in handy for the Small Enterprises Development Company’s (SEDCO) small and medium enterprise virtual capacity building.

SEDCO attends to between 30 000-40 000 SMEs per annum.

SEDCO Chief Executive Officer Dorrington Matiwane said due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were forced to train and engage SMEs virtually using tools such as Zoom Video Conferencing and Microsoft Teams.

“One of the concerns that SMEs raised was the cost of data. That is why we are happy and appreciate what MTN has done, especially because their network covers almost all parts of the country,” said Matiwane.

On the voice minutes service integration with other service providers, Matiwane said it is a “breath of fresh air.”

“This is a very momentous development that will improve efficiency, communication, and reduce communication costs for SMEs. It is getting easier for SMEs to do business in Eswatini and technology is playing a key role,” concluded Matiwane.

MTN promotes wearing a mask in new campaign

MTN Eswatini is adding its voice to the global drive to raise awareness about the importance of wearing masks with today’s launch of the #WearItForMe campaign.

Similar campaigns are executed across the 21 MTN Group African and Middle Eastern markets.

To help this much-needed change in behaviour, MTN Eswatini is committing its September 2020 marketing resources to encouraging everyone to do more to save lives.

As the Kingdom of Eswatini and the rest of the world continue to navigate the “new normal” brought about by COVID-19, wearing masks remain one of the most effective preventative measures to slow the spread of the virus and accelerate recovery. However, many people refuse to wear them, wear them incorrectly, or still feel it is not important.

“With infection rates predicted to reach a peak by September 2020, MTN felt that it is now more important than ever to put the weight of the brand behind driving this much-needed change in behaviour. The campaign messaging makes it clear that wearing a mask is not the only preventative measure needed to flatten the curve and accelerate recovery. MTN encourages every individual to wear a mask at all times when in public spaces, alongside practising the necessary social distancing, sanitisation, and hygiene measures as we navigate the new normal,” said MTN Chief Executive Wandile Mtshali. “Recent studies indicate that about 40 per cent people are asymptomatic. They do not know whether they have the virus or not. Therefore, consistent and appropriate use of masks can substantially reduce the virus transmission and save lives. We need to wear masks and wear them appropriately, together with the other preventive measures to reduce COVID-19 mortalities,” said Eswatini Ministry of Health Director of Health Services Dr. Vusi Magagula.

#WearItForMe is the next phase in MTN’s COVID-19 response under Y’ello Hope-MTN’s umbrella initiative which provides much-needed support during times of societal need.

It is a powerful call-to-action using the voice of some of the most influential figures within our communities; our mothers, and mother figures.

The initiative will see mothers and mother-figures sending heartfelt messages to their children, to wear their masks and “wear it for me”-saving lives.

MTN’s #WearItForMe campaign will build on the work already carried out under Y’ello Hope to brighten lives and limit the impact of the pandemic.

During this time, MTN has prioritised looking after its people, customers, communities and networks while focusing on efficiencies to help navigate the pandemic and its effects.

Initiatives ranged from free data lifelines, heavily discounted data and zero-rated access to educational sites. In addition, MTN has utilised technological solutions for dissemination of information.

“The COVID-19 pandemic requires effective and immediate action by governments, individuals and businesses. It is critical that we collectively respond with one unified voice and take the necessary measures to make a meaningful contribution to society,” concluded Mtshali.

#WearItForMe will run throughout the month of September. Visit www.wearitfor.me to send a message to someone encouraging him or her to do the right thing. #WearItForMe: Because when we all wear masks, we protect each other.

MTN Foundation donates computers worth E91 000 to Baylor Clinic

MTN Eswatini, through MTN Foundation have donated eight computers worth just over E90 000 to Baylor Clinic in Mbabane.

The donation will benefit over 5 300 patients who make about 40 000 visits to the medical facility per annum. About 40 per cent of these are children and caregivers.

The clinic is also a referral site for the most complicated cases of pediatrics, like those who are in third line antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Baylor Children Foundation Vice Chairperson Dr. Irma Allen and Baylor Clinic Executive Director Dr. Bhekumusa Lukhele received the computer donations on behalf of the medical institution.

This intervention was in response to a request by the non-governmental health institution for assistance to procure computers.

Baylor Clinic Executive Director Dr.Bhekumusa Lukhele said they urgently needed the computers because the ones they had were about 14 years old, and could not handle their advanced electronic record management system used to collect and store patient data.

“The computers donated by MTN Foundation will directly improve the care and treatment of our patients, reduce patient waiting times, increase accuracy of documentation, and facilitate rapid retrieval of information to improve patient quality care,” he said.

MTN Board Chairperson Busisiwe Simelane said when it comes to health; the MTN Foundation would like to cover more ground in supporting health interventions in the Kingdom of Eswatini.

“The challenge is often resource constraints: there is so much to do, yet the much-needed resources are always limited. MTN Foundation still makes it a point though to support, within the limitation of resources, initiatives which contribute to the improvement of quality of life of EmaSwati. Our hope is that this donation will enable this health facility to function efficiently and improve overall patient care,” she said.

Baylor Children Foundation Vice Chairman Dr. Irma Allen said they hope to have a long-term partnership with MTN.

The Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation Eswatini-Baylor Eswatini is a non-governmental organization that work under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with government.

Government provides a subvention to Baylor Eswatini and Baylor Eswatini provide high quality family centered pediatric and adolescent health care free of charge to all eligible patients.

The clinic was opened by His Majesty King Mswati III in 2006.

MTN, SEL contribute in E1.3m project at Magojela

MTN Eswatini, through MTN Foundation and Swaziland Empowerment Limited (SEL) have collaborated with the Ministry of Education and Micro Projects for the construction of an administration block and three teachers’ houses at Magojela High School.

The project worth E1.3 million consist of a construction of an administration block, two-bedroom house for the head teacher, and semi-detached staff houses which are all expected to be completed by November this year.

Both organizations contributed E450 000 towards this project with MTN forking out E100 000, while SEL invested E350 000, while the rest has been invested by the ministry of education and Micro-Projects.

The project was born out of an observation made by MTN and SEL after successfully sinking a borehole for the school that was clearly in dire need for water last year. The partners identified the need to put up these structures after realizing that teachers were using a container as their administration office, and most teachers relied on homesteads next to the school-for accommodation.

The school started operating in 2016 and it had 12 teachers and the Principal, Vusi Sukati gave away a house allocated to him to three teachers who had no accommodation to share it.

Sukati has been commuting daily-from Mpembekati (Manzini) to Magojela.

“It had been financially and physically draining, but giving up was not an option for me, because I wanted to leave a mark here. I wanted the school to start operating for the benefit of young people and the community here,” he said.

Sukati thanked MTN, SEL and partners for coming to the community’s rescue again.

“We are so grateful now that we are becoming a proper school. We hope this will contribute to the improvement of educational outcomes-through better results,” he said.

Despite the challenges it faced, last year, Magojela was named the second most improved school in the Manzini region.

“The new administration block will relieve the class that we were now using as the container then became small for us. Our next project will be adding a science laboratory, and this will help us to extend our classes up to Form Five,” he said.

He said they were also grateful that amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, they have enough water supply to protect the health, safety and well-being of pupils and teachers when schools re-open.

“This is another reason why we really thank The Ministry of Education, Micro-Projects, MTN and SEL for assisting us with the borehole last year. We now have access to close to 3 000 litres of clean water per day. This will make it easier for us to protect the health, safety and well-being of pupils and teachers when schools reopen,” he said.

MTN Eswatini Corporate Affairs Manager Mandla Luphondvo said they would continue working with like-minded partners to complement government’s efforts to improve the quality of education in the Kingdom of Eswatini.

“Supporting the provision of quality education is one of the pillars of the work that MTN does in communities, the others being health and enterprise development. MTN is of the view that if these areas are supported, they will enhance the country’s potential for growth,” he said.

He assured that MTN Eswatini remained committed to partnerships with both the public and private sector to continue driving national development.

MTN delivers strong first half results amid COVID-19 challenges, announces it will focus on Africa

MTN Group today reported encouraging results for the first half of 2020, navigating well through the economic crisis brought on by COVID-19.

MTN reported service revenue growth of 9,4% to R80 billion and EBITDA growth of 10,9% to R42 billion as efficiency initiatives saw its profit margins continue to improve. Headline earnings per share after non-operational impacts grew by 54%, operating free cash flow increased by 117,8% and ROE improved further to 14,1%.

“MTN’s first half performance affirmed the resilience of our people and business model as we delivered strong results against the backdrop of unprecedented socio- and macroeconomic uncertainty and challenges,” said MTN Group president and chief executive officer Rob Shuter.

“As we navigate the pandemic and its effects, we have prioritised looking after our people, customers and networks while focusing on efficiencies,” he said, adding that work-from-home programmes continue for MTN staff; Y’ello Hope Packages are helping ease customers’ financial pressures; and MTN’s support for various other initiatives aims to limit the impact of COVID-19 on society.

MTN also announced it was focusing its strategy in future on the African markets: “As part of our ongoing portfolio review, we believe the group is best served to focus in the future on our pan-African strategy. We will therefore be exiting the Middle East in an orderly manner over the medium term. As a first step we are in advanced discussions to sell our 75% stake in MTN Syria,” said Shuter.

Inspired by the group’s belief that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life, MTN added 11 million subscribers in the first six months of the year to reach a total base of 262 million. By end June 2020, MTN had 102 million active data users and 38 million active Mobile Money users.

Despite lockdown restrictions impacting network rollout, MTN Group invested R10 billion in capital expenditure across our markets and brought a further 54 million people into 3G and 4G coverage. The focus on affordability of data saw the average rate per megabyte reduced by 34%.

The group made progress on the asset realisation programme, concluding the disposal of the tower company investments in Ghana and Uganda for R8,8 billion.

MTN did not declare an interim dividend given the continued uncertain impact of COVID-19 on the operating environment but will consider a final dividend should conditions warrant.

While we expect the remainder of the year to be shaped by the ongoing challenges presented by the pandemic, we believe that MTN will remain comparatively resilient and is poised to sustain its growth over the medium term,” said Shuter.

MTN staff hands over food parcels to Mbabane residents:

Driven by love for their neighbors, MTN Eswatini staff have donated food parcels to 20 beneficiaries from the Mbabane West and East Tinkhudla, identified through the help of World Vision – a humanitarian organization with decades of experience in implementing food security programs; and Africa Cooperative Action Trust (ACAT).

This donation came as a result of the company’s in-house campaign known as “Feed a Family with a bag of Rice” staff initiative, started by MTN staff in May from personal financial contributions.

Through MTN MoMo, staff members made a minimum contribution of E50. They were able to raise about E5 100 which was then used to buy 20 food parcels which were made up of: rice, beans, sugar, and cooking oil.

MTN Head of Corporate Services Sibusiso Nhleko said the company normally uses the month of June to roll out its flagship corporate social investment programme known as the 21 Days of Y’ello Care, but due to the outbreak of COVID-19, it was not possible for the company to roll out its annual CSI programme this year.

“Therefore, staff members contributed due to the love of their neighbours. We pray that God increase what staff have donated today and touch others to follow suit. May we all help our neighbors as they continue to grapple with the effects of the outbreak of the virus,” he said. Mbabane West Indvuna Yenkhundla, Mlondi Dlamini, said they were lucky to be visited by MTN staff for the donation.

“Looking at the situation on the ground, there is nothing small when it comes to assistance. These food parcels will go a long way to ward off poverty that resulted from the outbreak of COVID-19,” he said.

He said poverty within the city was exacerbated by the perception that most people think life is better in the city.

“Most people came here looking for jobs. Unfortunately, most of them lost their jobs and it is difficult for them to go back home because they hope that things might change, or they can possibly find another job and the conditions that some live under are very heartbreaking. So, we need all the help we can get,” he said.

Margaret Mtshali (79), one of the beneficiaries from Zone 2, sincerely thanked MTN, saying, MTN staff were sent by God.

Mtshali stays with her husband and two grandchildren.

She said they only rely on government social grants for a living.

“While we really appreciate this assistance from Government, but it really doesn’t fully meet our needs. Therefore, we are very happy to receive this unexpected surprise today. At least there is no need to worry about food for the whole of this month,” she said.

“May God increase what you have and protect you and your families,” she further stated.

Nhleko encouraged all the beneficiaries to ensure that they stay safe.

“May God bless and protect all of you from this virus,” he said.
